Napoleon Bonaparte was born on 15 August 1769 in Ajaccio, Corsica into a gentry family. His father was Carlo Buonaparte, a lawyer and political opportunist, and his mother was Marie-Letizia. Educated at military school, he was quickly promoted and in 1796, was made commander of the French army in Italy, where he forced Austria and its allies to make peace. In 1798, Napoleon conquered Ottoman-ruled Egypt in an attempt to strike at British trade routes with India. He was stranded when his fleet was destroyed by the British at the Battle of the Nile.
Years later he became first consul of France, as the first consul, he made many reforms in law, economy, education and religion.
Napoleon got married twice, first with Josephine Bonaparte, nee de la Pagerie and Beauharnais; and then with Marie-Louise Bonaparte of Austria, whom he had a child with, called Napoleon II. Napoleon also had a notable lover called Countess Marie Walewska.
